Gender Matters Issue Forum

The Dallas Women’s Foundation is hosting an Issue Forum on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 4 – 6 pm at Arlington Hall. This event is open to the public and free of charge, but RSVP is required. The forum topic, Gender Matters, is about the impacts of the Texas state budget on the health, safety, education and economic security of women and girls.  Featuring feminist economist Diana Strassman from Rice University and senior budget analyst Eva DeLuna Castro with the Center for Public Policy Priorities (CPPP), the conversation will focus on a new report about the 2010-2011 state budget viewed through a gender lens.

Highlights of this study include:

  • Regressive tax policies in Texas place a disproportionate financial burden on female-headed households.
  • State investments in health and safety programs for Texans consistently rank among the lowest in the nation, ensuring that our women and girls have the worst health care access in the U.S.
  • Texas ranks 44th among the 50 states in public education spending per student and 50th in the share of adult women with at least a high school diploma.

The report, conducted by CPPP and DWF and underwritten by the Cecilia and Garrett Boone Family Fund, also considers actions needed to improve the outcomes for women and girls in our state.  Join us as we learn new ways to address public finance and policy in Texas!    RSVP: sgalbraith@dallaswomensfoundation.org.

Issue Forums are an education and outreach component of the Dallas Women’s Foundation Research Program.
